Have you ever witnessed strange issues with Oracle EPM 11.2.8? Handling the EPM InfraStructure part could be really tricky sometimes because of the strange issues and could make you scratch your head for weeks. While the installation process remains the same across any environment you choose but system could be really unpredictable sometimes and throw some errors in one environment and not in another. I encountered the same weird issue where the entire EPM environment stopped working abruptly after the nightly job and nothing was responding normally.
So like a normal day, I logged into the EPM workspace to perform my routine work at a support project and the page did not respond in a timely manner. The clock just kept spinning without rendering the page and it became frustrating after it repeatedly showed the error “Can’t reach this Page”. Now this is not a new installation and my EPM 11.2.8 system was running for a while so it was weird to me.
Now this is a pretty generic error that states the website is down and the immediate solution is to check if the webserver is running or not. To my surprise, nothing was wrong and all the services were running correctly. Even the health of services was green in the WebLogic console. Well, I performed the immediate step to restart the web server just in case it resolves.
Hmmm..!! That’s weird. What next then? Recycle the services in the server. Well yeah, that didn’t work either. The diagnostic logs did not have any relevant error that could possibly drive the solution so I went ahead and rebooted the servers just to give it a try but still the same. It just became frustrating with each passing minute of troubleshooting as I had tried all the possible solutions.
After hours of digging, I found out that OHS had issues on both the foundation servers (We had 2 foundation servers) and the foundation service on Server 2 was not responding either. This was strange as everything was working last night and it suddenly started to give me nightmares.
After a couple of solutions did not work, I decided to go with the reconfiguration of OHS and Foundation and it did not fix the issue maybe because some binaries might have gone corrupted. Again, I had no idea what went wrong.
I couldn’t find the files that got corrupted or what went wrong overnight, so I renamed the ohs folders on both foundation servers and reconfigured the webserver to create the new binaries. I then restarted all the service and guess what, it started working. I could finally see the workspace page and it gave me a sigh of relief. But again, we still had some issues with the Foundation services on Server 2 where the foundation was not responding properly.
Well, frustrating again isn’t it? I went ahead and renamed the user_projects folder on the Foundation 2 server and performed the reconfiguration of all the products (Basically just the redeployment to the App Server). Bam, the issue is resolved now. Oh man, I still do not understand what is the root cause of this issue and what went wrong suddenly but this was frustrating. The troubleshooting took almost 3 days after I opened SR with Oracle, reached out to people, and scratched my head a lot but it finally worked with the above steps and it’s a mystery to me. Glad it was not a production issue. 🙂
